There is a philosopher of current vintage, Peter Kreeft. Despite his age, he remains prolific in his writing. His book may sound peculiar, but it’s truly about embracing our life’s purpose- How to Be Holy: First Steps in Becoming a Saint. Yes, you read that right, a saint. Mumbling to yourself, I am far from being Mother Theresa. I lack the determination and fortitude to possess such character. Kreeft says sainthood is not only in your grasp, but is a fundamental task of being a spiritual being.
So, okay, you say, I am in; let's hear more. Kreeft writes in the appendix of his book a brief dialogue between his stupid self and sensible soul. One such exchange will give you an idea of what becoming a saint is all about.
Stupid Part of Soul: I know some people can become saints, but I'm not one of them. The gap between me and the saints is like the gap between a pebble and a mountain.
Sensible Part of Soul: I have four answers to that . First, a pebble is part of a mountain. It's made of the same stuff.. Second, the saints all started where you are , as pebbles. Third, you are not a pebble-no one is -but a seed. Youre small, but alive. Your whole identity is to grow. Fourth, you will become a saint because everyone in Heaven is a saint. God will not let you go until you are. It's unavoidable. In fact, I think you know that. That is why you are reading this book. So stop the false humility.
You get the flavor of this, there is no method. As Kreeft reminds us about sanctity. Love is the essence of sanctity. Love, as Kreeft points out, doesn't simplify life but adds more joy to it.
So, what has love got to do with it? Everything. Remmber Jesus boils it all down for us: Love God with all your heart and so too your neighbor as yourself.
